Just can't stop thinking about a couple of designs but don't really know where to start. Any suggestions? Thanks Larry |

Larry the first thing I always do is a complete rough sketch. Once you have the basic design the start refining the design. determine what materiald go where. Always keep in mind that you do not need an intire complete pictoral. Often just implacations of a sceen is enough for the minds eye to fill in with imagination. Be sure to check out Craig Larvins in lay class above. it is a great begaining tatorial. |

Larry, for a first -- a couple of thoughts for your consideration. First draw a scale drawing of the fretboard/headstock on velum (sp?) paper (and body if you are so inclined). Second draw a scale drawing of your inlay pattern -- cut out and lay on top of your scale drawing of the guitar. When you are happy with your sketch pull out the shell and see how all the colours work together. This will give you some perspective. Take digital pics and get some trusted eyes to give you an unbiased opinion. If you are looking for subject matter to create your inlay from google images is your friend. |

If you can find Grit Laskin's book "A guitarmaker's Canvas" , I highly recommend it. There is a short tutorial chapter & some incredibly inspiring work to get you motivated. Have fun! |

Larry Robinson's book and videos are also worth getting. A little expensive but it will answer a lot of questions. I would second the recomendation for Grit Laskin's book. Josh |
